With summer fast approaching I thought I should lighten things up with some blonde highlights in my hair. I’ve played with my hair color maybe twice in my life so while highlighting might be a regular salon situation for some; it was a very calculated, very thought out procedure for me. I’m a natural brunette, but wanted a little something to brighten my face and give my hair a little bit of change without doing anything too drastic. Blonde highlights or just some sort of highlights seemed like the perfect solution.
Since I’m not a hair expert I left the big decisions about my new ‘do up to someone who was. Luckily for me, that “someone” was celebrity hairstylist Sean James. His celebrity clientele includes Jaime Pressly, Uma Thurman and Jamie Lee Curtis, so I knew I was in incredible hands. That leads me to my first nugget of beauty advice: don’t highlight your own hair! It is too hard to distribute the color evenly and you’ll most likely end up with splotchy highlights. Not a good look.
Bring in photos of what like (even pictures of what don’t want can be helpful too!). Celebrity hairstyles are a great and easy way to let your hair stylist know what hair colors and styles you like and from there they can put their own creative spin on it and decide what will work best for you. For example, I brought in photos from a Victoria’s Secret catalog; immediately Sean knew that I was going for a natural, beach-babe vibe—very Gisele. He worked his magic and gave me the look I wanted! He applied blonde highlights all over my hair so it looked super natural. The highlights weren’t drastic (the people who noticed loved it, others couldn’t even tell!), but it really brightened up my face and left my locks super shiny—it was the perfect way to start spring! Yes, I think hair colors fall into seasons and I might just have some blonder, more saturated color in the summer!
One more thing! Coloring and highlighting your hair can really dry it out. Make sure you use a super moisturizing hair mask once a week to keep your tresses in tip-top shape. Even if your hair looks gorgeous, it won’t stay that way for long so start using a damaged hair treatment or leave-in conditioner once you get your hair colored. Besides, no one wants to touch dry hair. Moisturizing = soft, silky hair! I like this hair mask from Philip. B because you can leave it in for just 2 minutes, or overnight for extra repair + you can’t beat the price!
