When my boss, who will remain nameless, but can be reached at danwilliams@hellokitty.com, came into the office one morning with pink eye he unknowingly sparked a frightening memory of my first encounter with makeup-induced pink eye. It forced me to ask myself: when is it time to say goodbye to your makeup products? We all know this, but often ignore the fact that over time cosmetics are a playground for harmful bacteria.
THE NUMBERS ARE IN: Here are the expiration dates for your cosmetics beginning from the time they are first opened.
POWDERS and EYESHADOWS: 2 years
FOUNDATIONS and CONCEALERS: 1 year
LIPSTICK: 1 year
LIP GLOSS: 3 to 6 months
MASCARA: 3 months
EYELINER: 3 months (unless you sharpen your pencils regularly)
MAKEUP BRUSHES: Wash your makeup brushes every 2 weeks with shampoo, then lay them flat to dry on a towel.
SKINCARE PRODUCTS: Your skincare products begin losing potency once you open them; here are our guidelines.
ANTIOXIDANTS: 6 months after opening
RETINOID/RETINOL: start losing potency one year after opening
SUNSCREEN: 1 year after opening
ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS: 6 months after opening (be careful because AHAs actually become more potent with time = more harsh on your skin)
HYDROQUINONE: 1 year after opening
HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR PRODUCTS: Buy your products in a smaller size, because the clock starts ticking once you open it and what you don’t use is wasted.
