Hitting the beach and the pool this summer has been wrecking havoc on my hair. I need an SOS for my hair but, feeling a little overwhelmed with all the hair care products out there. Where to start? Let’s do an overview on what products work best for what hair types:
Fine hair: Less is more for thin strands because it tends to get oily if too much product is used. Stick to clear shampoos and avoid cream- based products that are intended for coarse or curly hair.
Dry shampoos are the secret weapon for fine hair because they stretch out time between washes by soaking up dirt and oil, but add body!
Secret Weapon for fine hair: Dry shampoos
They allow you to extend washing your hair by soaking up the oily and adding body.
Curly/Coarse hair:
Curly hair is the driest hair type of all. This is due to the oil in the root not being able to travel easily down the hair shaft. Look for conditioning products that have macadamia oil or wheat germ in them. This will trap water along the hair shaft and keep your tresses hydrated.
FYI: Do not wash curly hair everyday. It will dehydrate the hair and increase the frizz factor.
Processed Hair:
Adding moisture is key for this hair type as well. Focus on products that will add back in the moisture that was lost during treatment. Some products are designed especially for chemically treated hair. However, the jury is still out on whether or not they extend the color process. What do you think?
Best practice for treated tresses: Keep hair protected and your color from fading by wearing a hat in the sun. This will keep your color from fading. Also, be sure to condition the hair before you hit the pool or the beach. (This is a tip I’ll be practicing from here on out!).
Dry/Damaged Hair: Are you a victim of a hairdresser going mad or your own self doing too many treatments? Your hair needs TLC stat! There are many products out there that will help you gain your hair luster back—cream-based shampoos help smooth your hair and diffuse static creamy based shampoos.
